Someone uploaded the infamous scene to youtube, at long last. Warning- it can induce some serious, serious feels. Like how I’ve just been breathing really heavily and started crying. Just a little heads’ up.
But let’s talk about how up until this point, we thought of The Winter Soldier as a terrifying, badass assassin. A force to be reckoned with and feared. Hell, Natasha Fucking Romanoff was scared of him!
Then this scene happened, and you realize that all that we’ve seen up to this point has been a man who was not allowed an identity. The concept of a personality was tortured out of him to make him highly efficient. This scene firmly cements that he is anything but a villain. Worst part? An identity, even after seventy years of conditioning, still struggles to break through.
Just think about how strong and how free-willed James Buchanan Barnes was. How much did Hydra have to break him to reduce him to this submissive, childlike state? What awful things did they have to do to him to make him so broken and traumatized?
Cry with me.
I’ll never be happy again.
